何度も取り上げますが、本当にイデオムをマスターすることは大切。
自分のいいたいことをサッと伝えられるし、ネーティブの言っていることもすぐにわかります。
でもなかなかマスターできないのが大変！！
このメルマガでも何度も取りあげましたが、イデオムを覚えるときは、会話を作っちゃうことが大切です。
ただただ、ブツブツリピートしながら丸暗記しようとしても身につきません。一時的に覚えてもすぐ忘れる！
前にも書きましたが、long-term memoryに入れるには、“work with it”それを実際に使うことが大事です。
会話を作ってみましょう。
これはいつも、大学受験の勉強を教えている高校生にも、英会話を教えている生徒さんにもやっていただき、覚えてもらっています。
ちょっと例をあげましょう。
1. Idiom: “Break the ice”
社交の場で会話を最初にスタートして、人々がより快適に感じるようにすること。
Conversation:
Person A: “I was so nervous at the party, but when John joked about his cooking skills, it really broke the ice.”
Person B: “Yeah, it’s amazing how a little humor can make everyone feel at ease.”
2. Idiom: “Piece of cake”
めちゃ簡単！
Conversation:
Person A: “I was worried about the exam, but it turned out to be a piece of cake!”
Person B: “That’s great! It sounds like you were well-prepared.”
3. Idiom: “Burn the midnight oil”
Conversation:
Person A: “I have to finish this report by tomorrow morning, so I’ll be burning the midnight oil tonight.”
Person B: “Make sure to take some breaks. Working too long can be counterproductive.”
4. Idiom: “Spill the beans”
偶発的または時期尚早に秘密を暴露したり、情報を開示してしまうこと
Conversation:
Person A: “How did everyone find out about the surprise party?”
Person B: “I think Mark spilled the beans to a few people yesterday.”
5. Idiom: “A penny for your thoughts”
相手が何を考えているかを尋ねる方法。
Conversation:
Person A: “You’ve been quiet all evening. A penny for your thoughts?”
Person B: “I was just pondering about our next vacation.”
6. Idiom: “At the drop of a hat”
何のためらいもなく、即座に。
Conversation:
Person A: “Would you be willing to start a new project?”
Person B: “At the drop of a hat! I love new challenges.”
7. Idiom: “Beat around the bush”
要点を避けたり、本題を避けたりすること。
Conversation:
Person A: “So, what do you think about my idea?”
Person B: “Let’s not beat around the bush. I think it needs more work before it’s feasible.”
8. Idiom: “Cut to the chase”
時間を無駄にすることなく要点をつかむこと。
Conversation:
Person A: “I know you’ve got a lot to say, but can you cut to the chase?”
Person B: “Sure, the main thing I want to discuss is the budget.”
9. idiom: “Jump on the bandwagon”
流行していることや人気のあることに、他の人たちと一緒に参加すること。
Conversation:
Person A: “I noticed you started using that new project management software.”
Person B: “Yes, I decided to jump on the bandwagon after seeing how it improved the team’s efficiency.”
10. Idiom: “The last straw”
怒ったり、あきらめたりする原因となる一連の問題の最後の問題。もうこれ以上は無理、もう限界!
Conversation:
Person A: “I’ve been patient with my old car, but it breaking down today was the last straw. I’m getting a new one.”
Person B: “Sometimes, it just takes one more thing to tip the balance, doesn’t it
