今日は少し難しめのイディオムレッスン。
あまり聞いたことがないけど、役に立ちそうなイディオムについて書きたいと思います。
例文を提示しますが、意味わかりますか？
1. in hot water
(例) You’ll be in hot water if you keep on making such mistakes.
2. waste one’s breath
I feel like I am wasting my breath, because he never takes any of my advice.
3. slip one’s mind
I am sorry that I forgot to stop by the drugstore for you. It just slipped my mind.
4. break the ice
During the company retreat, Sarah told a funny story to break the ice and get everyone laughing and talking.
5. Hit the nail on the head
Example: When Jane said that the team was struggling due to poor communication, she hit the nail on the head.
6. Spill the beans
He accidentally spilled the beans about the new project before it was officially announced
7. A blessing in disguise
Losing that job was a blessing in disguise because it led me to my dream career.

1. in hot water

大変なことになる。
「そんな間違えし続けたら、大変なことになるよ～。」
これは覚えやすいですね～
2. waste one’s breath

呼吸を無駄使いするな！は直訳ですが、この場合、無駄なことをするという感じです。
「なんだか無駄な事をしているような気がする、だった彼は全然私のアドバイスを聞かないんだもん。」
3. slip one’s mind
I am sorry that I forgot to stop by the drugstore for you. It just slipped my mind.
コロッと忘れる。
「ごめん、あなたのためにドラッグストアに寄ること忘れちゃた。ついコロッと忘れたんだ。」
4. break the ice

初対面の人たちがいる時の、堅苦しい雰囲気を解きほぐすとか、会話の口火を切るみたいな感じですね。
「会社のミーティングで、サラは面白い話をして場を和ませ、みんなを笑わせて話を盛り上げた。」
5. hit the nail on the head
核心をつく。まさにその通りである。
When Jane said that the team was struggling due to poor communication,she hit the nail on the head.
「ジェーンが『チームが苦戦しているのはコミュニケーション不足のせいだ』と言ったとき、彼女は核心をついていた」
6. Spill the beans
うっかり秘密を漏らす。
昔投票をするとき、白い豆、黒い豆を使って候補者を表していたそうですが、袋から豆がこぼれおちると、投票結果が分かってしまうことからこの表現が生まれたそうな。
He accidentally spilled the beans about the new project before it was officially announced
「彼は新プロジェクトについて、それが正式に発表される前に誤って漏らしてしまったのだ。」
7. A blessing in disguise
不幸に見えても結局は幸福となるもの。（不幸中の幸い）
変装した幸福っ手面白い表現ですね。
Losing that job was a blessing in disguise because it led me to my dream career.
「その仕事を失ったことは、不幸中の幸いだ。私を夢のキャリアへと導いてくれたのだから。」
